But what is it to be a Muslim? Is it enough that you were born to Muslim parents and basically taught the Muslim ways? Is it enough that you have a "Muslim" name? Is it enough that it is written on your passport or other official government documents that you are a member of the Muslim faith? Is it enough that you attend some prayers or sermons at the masjid? Is it even truly enough that you utter the words of witness (shahada) or pray five times daily or fast the month of Ramadhan?

 Earlier, we started the story of a woman who was a typical example of the first generation of Muslim women who offered everything they could for the support of the Message and Messenger of Islam. For its sake she was about to sacrifice another marriage to an honorable and wealthy man. But through the grace of God, the man Abu Talha opened his mind and heart to the message of Islam. To our heroine that was enough of a reward for her, and she considered Abu Talha's conversion to Islam her dower (Sadaaq) not wanting any of the wealth and property he had offered her.

Let's talk frankly. Almost never do non-Muslims study Islam until they have first exhausted the religions of their exposure. Only after they have grown dissatisfied with the religions familiar to them, meaning Judaism, Christianity and all the fashionable "-isms"—Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism (and, as my young daughter once added, "tourism")—do they consider Islam.

It has been pointed out that no religion, ideology or constitution has given women as much dignity as Islam, nor have women gained so much of their rights as they have through the teachings of Islam, revealed in the words of God (the Qur'an) and manifested in the traditions (the Hadeeth) of Muhammad (pbuh). On the other hand, the women of Islam have through the ages proven their constant support of the Message since its inception. So the message of Islam gave women their rights and dignity, and they in return gave it, support.
